Ce faisant, il traite les horreurs et les cruaut\u00e9s de la guerre dans des tons tr\u00e8s sombres. Un exemple en est une <strong>nature morte vanitas<\/strong> saisissante de 1917.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Il faut la comprendre comme une m\u00e9taphore de la <strong>transience de tout ce qui est terrestre<\/strong>, ce qui est symbolis\u00e9 par le <strong>cr\u00e2ne<\/strong>, les <strong>fleurs rouges fan\u00e9es<\/strong> et la <strong>bougie consum\u00e9e<\/strong>. Un lourd rideau de velours vert r\u00e9v\u00e8le \u00e9galement la vue d&rsquo;une arri\u00e8re-salle dans laquelle trois \u00eatres fantomatiques dansent. <\/p>\n\n<p>Evard a sign\u00e9 le bord sup\u00e9rieur gauche de l&rsquo;image en rouge avec <strong>\u00ab Louvrier \u00bb<\/strong> (ouvrier).
