A Swiss Modernist Painter

La Machine, 1925, oil on hardboard, 44 x 33.5 cm

La Machine, 1925

The work “La Machine” from 1925 combines constructivist with cubist elements. The interwoven shapes consist predominantly of circular and gear-like fragments as well as triangular and rectangular shapes. As early as 1913, Evard began to express himself artistically with an abstract vocabulary of forms and is therefore rightly considered one of the pioneers of Cubism and Constructivism.

Despite the almost mosaic-like character of the work, a technical construction can be seen in the picture based on the geometric shapes and taking the title into account. The front of the picture is dominated by strong colors and allows the background to recede in weaker, pastel-like colors, which creates an exciting depth effect.
