A Swiss Modernist Painter

Nocturne, 1948, oil on cardboard, 38.5 x 46 cm

Nocturne, 1948

Evard returned to the “Nocturne” series, which dates back to the 1920s, at the end of the 1940s. This abstract composition against a red background is dominated by the circular motif, which Evard shows here in connection with four- and triangular shapes. Comparing this work with other constructivist works by the artist, the reduction to a few forms is striking; this work appears extremely puristic. Could it be that Evard is enlarging and isolating a part of his complex machine from 1925 here? The fan-like element in the lower left area of the picture also recalls the napkin depictions in the still lifes.
