What is remarkable about Evard’s oeuvre is the immense variety of styles and influences, as well as the fact that he never committed himself to a single style. Thus, polyvalent elements of various art genres are repeatedly combined in a new formal scheme. This can also be seen in this pear still life with an elaborate seascape at sunset. In addition to Evard’s sense of color, the pasty-pointillist application of paint in the foreground also reveals fauvist features. For the vibrant, strong color is elevated to a stylistic element and, on an equal footing with the subject of the painting, forms a pictorial unit. The pears were placed symmetrically in a line in the foreground of the picture. This shows, on the one hand, the parallelism of objects typical of Evard’s works, and on the other hand, the depiction is transformed into an almost surreal visual language through the targeted draping of the fruits.
