A Swiss Modernist Painter

Spring over the Hills, 1921, Oil on hardboard, 27 x 22 cm

Spring over the Hills, 1921

With just a few shapes, this oil painting manages to evoke the impression of a landscape. What is extraordinary about this painting is that the sky makes up over two-thirds of the entire picture. Similar to Caspar David Friedrich’s Monk by the Sea, the painting exudes a certain loneliness. In contrast to Friedrich’s Monk by the Sea, however, this does not seem oppressive, as the lush green, bathed in sunlight, conveys a cheerful impression. The viewer’s gaze goes into the distance and thus to the countless possibilities that the future still holds.
