This painting was created one year after the Portrait of a Young Woman and the Self-Portrait from 1913. The unifying elements of these works – besides their chronological proximity – are their format, background, and the relatively frontal perspective of the subject.
While the backgrounds in the Portrait of a Young Woman and the Self-Portrait are abstract, here the snow-covered Swiss mountains are alluded to, which, however, in their composition and color scheme also suggest Constructivism.
