A Swiss Modernist Painter

Portrait of a Young Woman, 1913

This work by André Evard is one of his early portraits and presents a young, red-haired woman with a hat.

Two aspects of this work are particularly noteworthy: firstly, the unnatural incarnate of the woman, which shimmers in a green hue and is accentuated in some places with pink, yellow and red. Secondly, it is the interesting tension between figurative and non-figurative art.

For the first time in André Evard’s oeuvre, an abstract background can be seen. From this point on, this stylistic element is repeatedly taken up by the artist in subsequent works. Evard’s great talent for not only bringing together contrasting styles, but also for bringing them into harmonious harmony, will be the defining characteristic of his art throughout his life.
