Two Trees in Spring 1948 Oil on hardboard 35 x 27 cm

Two Trees in Spring, 1948

In this landscape painting, the contrast between the thickly applied paint and the delicate brushstrokes is immediately striking. The resulting structure gives the trees a three-dimensional feel. By applying white paint in delicate brushstrokes between the two trees, an impression of interconnectedness is created, thus merging them into one. The two trees can perhaps also be understood as a symbol between two people.

The composition is balanced by the symmetrical arrangement of the blossoming trees. Here, the influence of Constructivism is evident once again. The two trees and their shadows can be imagined as circles, while the small yellow clouds, whose edges are illuminated by the sun, can be seen as smaller circles, one of which is located exactly in the center of the two trees. These small clouds are arranged at the same intervals to add rhythm to the upper half of the picture.
