A Swiss Modernist Painter

In the depiction of a stylized quince, brought very close to the viewer, André Evard was inspired by Post-Impressionism, which repeatedly found expression in the artistic work of the Swiss painter.

This is particularly evident in the design of the presented fruit – fine dots and juxtaposed strokes. In addition, the artist demonstrates a very sensitive handling of light here. The source cannot be precisely identified, but the still life is immersed in a diffuse glow and leaves a slight sheen on the fruit.

In this work, Evard’s admiration for the French painter Jean Siméon Chardin (1699-1779) and his simple motifs is expressed, as well as for Flemish painting.
