A Swiss Modernist Painter

Tree in Blossom, 1955, Oil on hardboard, 35 x 27 cm

Tree in Blossom, 1955

This landscape painting, featuring a single tree, is symmetrically composed. The light blue background is brighter around the tree and gradually darkens towards the edges, creating the impression of a vignette and presenting the tree as if on a stage. No other elements in the background distract the viewer’s attention, allowing the viewer to fully concentrate on the pink tree. The unusual color scheme conveys a sense of spring and is reminiscent of the Expressionist painters, who also eschewed realistic coloring in nature to express a particular feeling instead.
