A Swiss Modernist Painter

Jungfrau, 1945, Oil on canvas, 46 x 54 cm

Jungfrau, 1945

From a network of horizontal and vertical lines in shades of blue, white, and brown, the mountain landscape depicted here was captured on canvas with an expressive, rapid brushstroke. Through this skillful brushwork by the artist André Evard, the rock filling the image also acquires furrows and edges, which are further emphasized by the setting sun and its reflection in the white snow. This subject is one of André Evard’s preferred motifs. In this case, it is the Jungfrau massif as seen from the municipality of Lauterbrunnen.

The influence of Ferdinand Hodler and Evard’s teacher Charles L’Eplattenier can be seen in this work, but it gains a dramatic quality through the intense color contrasts, which is highly characteristic of the Swiss artist and should be considered independently of its predecessors.
