Evening Mood, 1932

Nature, with its unmistakable play of light – especially at sunrise and sunset – was throughout his life an indispensable source of artistic inspiration for the painter André Evard. As his main residence, La-Chaux-de-Fonds, is located approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, it offered him a very special view of this natural spectacle. The multitude of paintings dedicated to this motif, which particularly captivate the viewer with their unique coloration, bear witness to his deep love for nature.

One of these paintings is the work “Evening Mood”, which depicts an uninhabited landscape. The foreground, and thus the meadow at the bottom edge of the painting and the clouds at the top edge, are applied in a thick layer of paint, creating a relief-like effect. In terms of color, these areas of the painting are dominated by a dark color, but Evard succeeds, through his special use of colors such as red, violet, pink, and yellow, in expressively reproducing the impression of a sunset.
