A Swiss Modernist Painter

Bouquet of Flowers in Vase, 1935

This oil painting from 1935 depicts a floral still life. Evard centrally places a yellow vase filled with red flowers, beneath which he suggests a semicircular table. The artist designs the background abstractly, with various shades of red and yellow adorning the blurred background in vertical stripes. For the lush abundance of blossoms and leaves, the artist chooses a more realistic but stylized painting style with greater detail, using sharp black outlines for the flowers and leaves. While some flowers are still in full bloom—a single one rises powerfully—others are already drooping. The artist takes up the traditional theme of the still life—the vanitas—in this work. Even after developing his constructive painting style, Evard remains true to the traditional still life; as an artist, he loved variety and used different registers throughout his life.
