Two Trees in Front of a Grain Field, 1970

The work depicts a warm, vibrant landscape dominated by a shimmering golden-yellow grain field. The vertical structures of the stalks are rendered in quick, dynamic strokes, making the field appear to be in motion—as if the wind is sweeping through it. In the foreground stand two slender trees that frame the image. Both bear dense, color-intensive foliage consisting of bold red and green tones. These high-contrast treetops stand out clearly against the yellow field behind them, lending the painting a strong rhythm. The prominent black contour lines—typical of Evard’s late works—structure both the tree trunks and the foliage, emphasizing the expressive effect. The middle ground consists of a hilly landscape in soft beige and ochre tones, whose curved lines form a calm horizon. Above this lies a light, almost pastel-colored band of sky that completes the composition at the top.
Overall, a harmonious interplay of intense coloring, sketchy brushwork, and clear structuring is created. The gouache technique enhances the luminosity of the colors and gives the scene a fresh, almost shimmering atmosphere.
