This Art Nouveau female portrait from 1910 is one of Evard’s watercolor miniatures: although the picture measures only 15 x 10 cm, it is extremely detailed. It depicts a woman in front of a flowering cherry tree, and the ornamental design and many decorative elements make the foreground and background appear interwoven. The work is primarily rendered in delicate shades of pink, blue, and brown. The fact that Evard uses these colors throughout the pictorial space further reinforces this unified character. The woman’s melancholic gaze, which wanders into the indefinite distance, gives the work a dreamy and longing note. Both the Japanese woodcut with its precision and the oriental ornamentation seem to have influenced Evard here.
