The enamel work “Fir Tree in Snow” by André Evard, measuring approximately 13 x 6 cm, depicts a stylized, almost ornamentally designed fir tree motif. Rendered in warm shades of red, the fir tree form stands out in symmetrical, scale-like steps distinctly from the dark, red-black iridescent background. Fine golden speckles run through the entire picture, giving it a festive, almost mystical appearance. The black interior drawing emphasizes the contours of the abstracted fir tree and creates a play between surface and depth. The clear structure and decorative rhythm are reminiscent of elements of Art Nouveau, while the reduced color palette and the abstracted formal language already point the way to Modernism. The work demonstrates Evard’s early artistic engagement with ornament, color, and structure – aspects that later occupied him in concrete art as well. The enamel technique enhances the luminosity of the colors and gives the object a noble feel.
