A Swiss Modernist Painter

Cubist Composition, 1913, oil on hardboard, 36 x 52 cm

Cubist Composition, 1913

In 1913, the Swiss artist André Evard embarked on his own artistic path, combining abstraction and objectivity in a single pictorial motif to unite.

The painting “Cubist Composition” is dominated by geometric forms in the foreground, which are arranged like a still life and show parallels to early Cubism. The background recedes strongly in color and consists almost exclusively of horizontal, broad lines, which in their abstracted form can still be recognized as an Alpine chain.

Looking at the work, it is noticeable that, in contrast to his fellow painters Picasso or Braque, who are known for this style, Evard forgoes earthy tones and instead works with his preferred colors blue, pink, green and yellow.
