Pont Neuf, 1925

This highly abstract view of the historic Pont Neuf bridge in Paris illustrates Evard’s artistic development during the years between 1923 and 1926. During this period, he increasingly traveled to Paris and drew inspiration from the city’s architecture, museums, galleries, and artists. Consequently, he enriched his art with this industrial-urban theme, which would culminate in his work ‘La Machine’ from the same year. The cityscape – with a focus on the bridge and the Seine – is characterized by the reduction to basic geometric forms. Thick, black contour lines outline the trees and clouds, trace the waves, and depict the facades of the buildings in the background. The interior of the forms is generously filled with luminous, Fauvist colors. Colors and lines, through the tilting and shifting of perspective, lead to a stylized ornamentation.
