Sunsets were among Evard’s favorite motifs. In this 1949 oil painting, he once again portrays a sunset. The painting features various shades of red and yellow, creating striking contrasts in conjunction with the black also employed. It depicts a red-hued sky with a few discernible clouds; the underlying landscape is rendered so abstractly that it is challenging to precisely define the natural setting. Evard constructs this abstract landscape from several horizontally arranged, differently colored stripes, allowing the hues to gently blend. In the distance, a mountain range is discernible, its contour standing out more distinctly against the sky. Several black birds circle in the air. Through this expressive color scheme, Evard crafts a mood-evoking landscape that gains a somber, mystical touch from the black, the dark red tones, and the black birds.
