A Swiss Modernist Painter

Spring Awakening, 1949

This landscape, which depicts a single, centrally positioned tree, represents a motif in André Evard’s art that he has repeated in many variations. Almost unnaturally illuminated, the tree, which blooms in spring and is depicted in flaming yellow and red tones, is placed in the center of the composition. This impression is reinforced by the skillful use of warm and cold colors.

Evard uses a dynamic, pastose application of paint to depict the blossoms and leaves, as well as the flower meadow. The pointillist design of the foreground forms an exciting contrast to the calmer brushwork in the middle and background.
