Spring Tree, 1915

The spring tree is one of Evard’s favorite motifs. He also takes up this motif in this oil painting from 1915. The work depicts a centrally placed flowering tree, which is characterized by a strikingly thin trunk. The tree stands alone in a wide field: Evard underpins it with a green meadow, the background is a gray sky densely covered with clouds. At the upper end of the picture, the luminous blue of the sky seems to shine through; we find another blue stripe between the meadow and the clouds, presumably a distant representation of a mountain range. This work captivates with its contrast between the delicacy of the young flowering tree, which bravely stretches its magnificent flowers towards the sky, and the force of nature, here represented by the overwhelmingly large cloudy sky. The nature lover Evard seems to depict the fragility of the awakening of spring here.
