A Swiss Modernist Painter

Sunset over the Alps in Bern, 1920, Oil on wood, 22.2 x 27 cm

Sun’s Path over the Alps in Bern, 1920

Evard repeatedly depicts the sunset in his works. As a great nature lover and observer, he never tires of capturing the various moods of his native mountains. In this work, the radiant yellow-orange of the sun occupies a good two-thirds of the pictorial space, with the painter choosing a generous, impasto application of paint; the brushwork is expressive. Below, Evard depicts the mountains in dark tones, allowing them to stand out effectively against the bright background. The painting emanates a great luminosity, and the circularly depicted sunbeams seem to draw the viewer into the image. The depiction appears reduced and suggests that Evard would soon embark on a search for a new formal language.
