A Swiss Modernist Painter

Winter Jura Landscape, 1955, Oil on hardboard, 26 x 34 cm

Winter Jura Landscape, 1955

The delicate brushwork used in this painting is reminiscent of Chinese or Japanese landscape painting known as Suibokuga. Evard was inspired by his teacher L’Eplattenier, the pioneer of Swiss Art Nouveau, to build an extensive collection of Japanese prints and Asian art. The influences of this art are particularly evident in the depiction of the trees in this painting.
