Red Roses in Vase 2, 1916

This still life by André Evard depicts a small bouquet, consisting of two red peonies in a blue vase. While the vibrant color of the blossoms draws strong attention, a closer look reveals the surface on which the vase rests. This appears to be standing on a type of column. Only the uppermost part is visible, specifically the capital of the column adorned with an Ionic cyma. This cyma is strikingly detailed, while the actual main motif – the flowers and the vase – were rendered with a few colored brushstrokes.
