A Swiss Modernist Painter

Rose in crystal vase, 1925, oil on hardboard, 29 x 34 cm

Rose in Crystal Vase, 1925

In contrast to the often intense color of his paintings, the Swiss artist André Evard presents here a classic, understated still life in muted ashen brown and red tones – a homage to his role models from Flemish painting.

Shown is a stylized bouquet of red roses in a crystal vase. Centered, the bouquet occupies two-thirds of the total area. The background is kept simple and monochrome, while the brushstrokes are applied dynamically and thickly.

The naturalistic choice of colors and the pronounced chiaroscuro on the flower heads and on the table give the painting spatial depth and vibrancy. The roses are formed from a few, bold brushstrokes and, in their expressive, flat form, are far removed from the geometric, flat rose series completed in the previous year. In this way, Evard ties in with the subject he loved, but gives it a different, but no less distinctive style.
