Still Life, 1918

This still life captivates with its unusual composition. Instead of centrally placed flower bouquets or fruit baskets, Evard chose to paint a composition featuring a lamp on the right side of the image, a bronze figure on the left, a stack of books in the background, and a small bouquet of peonies in the lower right. The positioning of the individual objects is particularly interesting here. All these objects appear to be placed on a type of tray or table with a high rim. The obligatory bouquet of pink peonies seems almost displaced from the pictorial space. The vase disappears behind the high rim of the display surface, while a part of the bouquet is cut off by the right edge of the image. The illuminated lamp with a white fabric shade creates light reflections on the surrounding objects. This is also visible on the bronze figure. The figure is placed on a small pedestal and depicts a standing human figure, highly reduced in form. It is turned to the right, facing the lamp, and is thus illuminated frontally by it.
It almost seems like an unobserved moment in which the figure has come to life and turned towards the light.
