{"id":2137,"date":"2025-04-15T18:18:07","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T16:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/andre-evard.de\/nicht-kategorisiert\/cherry-blossoms-and-church-1913\/"},"modified":"2025-10-12T20:58:34","modified_gmt":"2025-10-12T18:58:34","slug":"cherry-blossoms-and-church-1913","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andre-evard.de\/en\/art-nouveau\/cherry-blossoms-and-church-1913\/","title":{"rendered":"Cherry Blossoms and Church, 1913"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On display is a <strong>landscape depiction<\/strong>, which is dedicated to the <strong>cherry trees in full bloom<\/strong> in the middle of a flower meadow.<\/p>\n\n<p>The petals of the trees vary from rich <strong>red tones<\/strong> to <strong>delicate white-ros\u00e9 hues<\/strong>. These are depicted in the meadow and trees in a pointed, impasto manner. <\/p>\n\n<p>In the distance extends a village bordered by trees and mountains. In the center, a church can be seen, which is identified by the colorfully and formally contrasting church tower.<br\/>The church tower rises imposingly and powerfully from this scenery. Like a pointing finger, it directs the gaze upwards to the sky, giving the work a <g id=\"gid_0\">symbolic value<\/g>. This <strong>upward-directed line of sight<\/strong> is further emphasized by the <strong>cypresses<\/strong> visible in the background, as well as the targeted placement of the <strong>cherry trees in the foreground and middle ground<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p>These also form the motivic center of this spring-like scenery. Almost like a mirror image, the symmetrical arrangement of the trees is more than just pure landscape observation, but \u2013 as is so often the case with Andr\u00e9 Evard \u2013 a <strong>decorative-ordering element<\/strong> that brings the ornamental character of his works to the fore. <\/p>\n\n<p>As a student of <strong>Charles L\u2019Eplattenier<\/strong>, a well-known representative of the Style Sapin, Evard&#8217;s ornamental ordering principles are borrowed from the <strong>ideas of Art Nouveau<\/strong>.<br\/>However, Evard interpreted this approach in the <strong>spirit of modern art<\/strong>. Brushstrokes and formal language open up an increasingly <strong>expressionistic<\/strong> character.<br\/>Again, quite in the manner of the Impressionists, Evard <strong>avoided<\/strong> the <strong>use of black color<\/strong> and marked shadows and dark areas with corresponding bluishness. True to the conviction of the Impressionists, the Swiss artist went out into <strong>nature<\/strong> to capture the true colors and light situation of nature.  <\/p>\n\n<p>This is also evident in one of his works from 1914, which shows that landscape with the village from a closer vantage point this time: <em>Church with Cypresses, 1914, oil on hardboard, 34 x 34 cm<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n<p>His love for the landscape around his <strong>hometown of La Chaux de Fonds<\/strong> becomes clear here. At the same time, he masterfully succeeds in capturing the spirit of spring.<br\/>Evard was often in <g id=\"gid_1\">nature and immersed himself in the forms and colors to be seen there<\/g>.
