Art critic <g id=\"gid_3\">Jean-Marie Nussbaum<\/g> not only praised Evard&#8217;s &#8220;<g id=\"gid_4\">open-minded spirit<\/g>&#8221; but also, owing to his <g id=\"gid_5\">sense of color<\/g>, described the artist as a &#8220;<g id=\"gid_6\">jeweler of painting<\/g>.&#8221; Landscape painting is a recurring theme throughout the entire oeuvre of the Swiss artist Andr\u00e9 Evard, making it a significant <strong>component<\/strong> of his artistic <strong>expression<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Andr\u00e9 Evard was born in <strong>1876<\/strong> in <strong>Renan<\/strong>, Bernese Jura, and passed away in Le Locle in <strong>1972<\/strong> at the age of 96. After his father&#8217;s early death, he moved with his mother, Marie Evard, to <g id=\"gid_3\">La Chaux-de-Fonds<\/g> in the Swiss canton of Neuch\u00e2tel. Despite extended stays in <g id=\"gid_4\">Paris<\/g> between 1923 and 1927, where he gained significant recognition at the <g id=\"gid_5\">Salon d\u2019Automne<\/g> and <g id=\"gid_6\">Salon des Ind\u00e9pendants<\/g>, and where he once again intensively engaged with old and modern <g id=\"gid_7\">masters<\/g> and met artists such as <g id=\"gid_8\">Georges Braque<\/g>, <g id=\"gid_9\">Robert Delaunay<\/g>, and <g id=\"gid_10\">Theo van Doesburg<\/g>, Evard always returned to his <g id=\"gid_11\">homeland<\/g>. There, he consistently drew inspiration from the surrounding <strong>nature<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>La Chaux-de-Fonds<\/strong>, along with Biel and Le Locle, is one of Switzerland&#8217;s most renowned <strong>watchmaking cities<\/strong>, which is why Evard learned the craft of <strong>enameling<\/strong> during his training. La Chaux-de-Fonds is located at an altitude of approximately <g id=\"gid_3\">1,000 meters<\/g> above sea level, making it one of Europe&#8217;s <g id=\"gid_4\">highest-situated<\/g> cities. From this elevation, Evard was particularly fascinated by the <g id=\"gid_5\">play of light<\/g> that presented itself to him during sunrises and sunsets, which became one of the most important <strong>sources of inspiration<\/strong> for the artist.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong>Seascape at Sunset<\/strong>&#8221; was created in 1965 and depicts precisely this fascinating play of light that the artist so often observed and incorporated into his work.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The painting is executed in oil on hardboard and measures 32 x 46 cm. The dominant colors are various <strong>shades of red and yellow<\/strong>, which gain a distinct <strong>contrast<\/strong> from the <strong>blue<\/strong> of the lake and the two small blue clouds. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The painting is divided into <strong>two planes<\/strong>. While in the <g id=\"gid_1\">foreground<\/g> one sees a dark, yet flowery bank with four bare, thin tree trunks, the background is dominated by the depiction of the <g id=\"gid_2\">sky<\/g>. Behind the blue lake, a <g id=\"gid_3\">mountain range<\/g> stretches across the entire horizon. It is highly probable that this is the Eiger, M\u00f6nch, and Jungfrau mountain range, which Evard frequently painted, as well as the underlying Lake Thun, which could also be depicted here. The silhouette of the <strong>mountain scenery marks<\/strong> the <strong>horizon while<\/strong> <strong>Lake Thun<\/strong> shimmers in various shades of blue.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Evard&#8217;s late work, elements of <strong>Pointillism<\/strong>, <strong>Expressionism<\/strong>, and <strong>Art Nouveau<\/strong> can be found in his <strong>figurative<\/strong> works, showcasing his extensive artistic <strong>range<\/strong>. The <strong>depictions of nature<\/strong> and the <strong>colors of nature<\/strong> bear witness to the Swiss artist&#8217;s intense <strong>emotionality<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this work, one clearly recognizes Evard&#8217;s <strong>concrete-constructive style<\/strong>, which the artist discovered for himself as early as the <strong>1930s<\/strong>. Due to his early concrete-constructive works, Andr\u00e9 Evard is considered the <strong>pioneer<\/strong> of <strong>Swiss<\/strong> <strong>Modernism<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The painting features an <strong>axially symmetrical<\/strong> <strong>composition<\/strong>. This is particularly evident in the two tree trunks placed on either side, as well as in the two small blue clouds floating in the reddish-yellow sky at the center of the image axis. The <strong>distances<\/strong> to the two inner tree trunks are identical.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cloud formations above the two blue clouds are also arranged axially symmetrically on the right and left sides.
