This watercolor’s color scheme and ornamental structure are characteristic of Art Nouveau, the art movement in which Evard painted at the beginning of his artistic career. The sun sets behind the mountains, which are silhouetted against the horizon. Here, Evard also aimed to visually represent the changing light conditions at different times of day, in the style of the Impressionists. As is often the case, he chose the landscape of his homeland, the Jura. The orange trees in the foreground form a complementary contrast to the trees in the background, introducing tension into the painting.
