A Swiss Modernist Painter

Nocturne, 1948, oil on hardboard, 33 x 45.8 cm

Nocturne, 1948

This 1948 Nocturne work is part of a series and features a motif very similar to the Nocturne variant with a red background. In this variant, Evard reverses black and red: a completely black background now allows the vibrant colors of the abstract composition to shine even more, especially the strong red of the largest circle. In his abstract works, Evard often repeats a very similar motif, varying the color scheme. This reveals his great interest in the effect of colors. Indeed, despite the identical motif, this approach results in paintings with distinct effects, as can be clearly observed in these Nocturne examples.
