Fireworks with People, 1919

The painting depicts a dynamic and vibrant evening scene, with the glow of fireworks over an urban landscape as its central motif. Along the lower edge of the painting, a hill rendered in shades of green stretches, upon which rows of silhouette-like figures are discernible. This minimalist, almost shadowy depiction of people provides a calm counterpoint to the eruptive movement of the sky.
The predominant part of the composition is occupied by the nocturnal firmament, structured by the energetic lines and color streaks of the fireworks. The dominant red and yellow tones, interspersed with vivid green, lend an intense luminosity to the scene. At the upper edge of the painting, the traces of color transition into an almost white light, marking the climax of the fireworks’ explosive dynamism.
The expressive color palette, in which blue, violet, and pink tones merge, stands in stark contrast to the darker areas of the foreground. This juxtaposition of light and shadow, movement and stillness, imbues the work with a dramatic tension reminiscent of Expressionism’s painterly experiments. Through the emphasized use of color as an independent means of expression, the naturalistic rendering of the motif recedes into the background in favor of an emotionally charged, atmospheric effect.
