A Swiss Modernist Painter

Summer in the Jura, 1913, watercolor on paper, 42 x 52.5 cm (R.), 8 x 8.4 cm (upper right)

Summer in the Jura, 1913

This watercolor, with its light, vibrant, summery colors, is closely related to the paintings “Sunset with Fir Tree” and “Spring over the Hills.” As in those paintings, a double peak is the main motif of this work.

Through a skillful omission of pictorial spaces, Evard manages to suggest the reflecting water surface of the lake and the hot air above the mountains, so that one literally feels the summer heat. The omitted areas also have a contrapuntal effect and ensure a balanced harmony in the picture.
