Roses Rouges, 1923

This abstract still life depicts a magnificent bouquet of roses, placed in a stylish vase on a table. While the rose heads are depicted in circles, quarter circles, and ellipses, the rest of the painting is characterized by strong linearity. Strict diagonals, verticals, and horizontals lend the painting a crystalline structure. The varying light and dark color gradations within the linear subdivisions create the impression of plays of light and shadow in monochromatic gray and white tones. The slightly brownish vase acts as a transition towards the red, dark red blossoms.
