André Evard’s peonies from 1945 shine through the unique use of color, which is characteristic of the Swiss artist’s art.
He designs the buds of the flower with a pasty application of paint of red, white and pink. The artist also cleverly uses the pink in the light background, applying it with an expressive brushstroke, suggesting a kind of radiance of the blossoms. These dominate the entire pictorial composition simply by their format-filling size. The leaves of the peonies meander from the lower, right-hand corner of the picture between individual blossoms. Through the vivid depiction of the peonies, the painting does not give the impression of a rigid still life, but instead André Evard presents us with an image of the vibrant spring with this work.
