Boy, 1910

This small-format work is among the early watercolors created by André Evard (1876-1972). It shows a young boy in a bust portrait, filling the small format. His head is tilted, his gaze absorbed and directed downward. He is wrapped in warm clothing, a red scarf nestled around his neck. The nature of the background as well as the boy’s clothing imply a cold season. The stylized background features a foliage bed applied with mere brushstrokes. Evard nuances the depiction in various shades of red, brown, and blue. The schematically suggested pictorial surfaces that together form the representation of the figure are reduced and simultaneously composed into a harmonious overall impression. Evard’s talent lies precisely in conveying a mood—such as melancholy—to the viewer through this reduction and simplicity.
