In his work “Fish” from 1957 (50 x 56 cm), André Evard impressively demonstrates his ability to translate figurative elements into a clear, abstract formal language. Several stylized fish are depicted in dynamic motion, closely aligned and separated by distinct black contours. Despite the reduction to simple geometric forms, the motif remains clearly recognizable and acquires an almost musical composition through its rhythmic arrangement.

The muted yet varied color palette – consisting of white, black, ochre, grey, blue, and rust red – lends the painting a calm, balanced atmosphere. The wavy lines in the background suggest the movement of water and enhance the sense of vibrancy and dynamism.

“Fish” unites central elements of Evard’s artistic creation: the reduction to the essential, the search for harmony in color and form, and the connection between figuration and abstraction. The work exemplifies his affinity for constructive and concrete currents of modernism, while simultaneously highlighting Evard’s independent position within the Swiss avant-garde.
