Yellow Roses, 1924

The oil painting “Yellow Roses” from 1924 is part of André Evard’s Rose Series. Evard consistently pursues his artistic path of concrete abstraction, fully transforming the roses, which were still clearly recognizable in his 1923 works, into a complex geometric composition in this piece. Against a monochrome light gray background, the vibrant composition rises, with the titular yellow dominating the lower part, while a broader color palette – including shades of red, blue, green, and brown – was used in the upper section. The geometric, almost symmetrical composition – characterized by strict, diagonal lines that spread across the painting almost like a grid – lends the painting a sense of harmony despite all its dynamism. In contrast to the many lines, right angles, and angular forms, in the upper center of the painting, we find circular and semicircular shapes divided into color fields: the roses, whose petals the artist meticulously depicts here as monochromatically colored circular segments.
