This work by André Evard is painted in 1914, the first year of the war. The viewer’s gaze is directed through a stone path that leads directly into the picture and to a church with a pointed, long tower. The chapel is lined by spherical and cylindrical trees and can be reached via a staircase, on which a single woman is seen from behind. The colour scheme is harmonious in shades of red, white and green and is repeated in all levels of the picture, which almost eliminates the depth of perspective.
