Alps (Jungfrau), 1945

From an interweaving of horizontal and vertical lines in shades of blue, white and brown, the mountain landscape shown here was captured on canvas with an expressive, rapid brushwork. Thanks to André Evard’s skilful handling of the brush, the rock formations that fill the picture also gain grooves and edges, further accentuated by the setting sun and its reflection in the white snow. This subject is one of André Evard’s preferred motifs: the Jungfrau massif as seen from the municipality of Lauterbrunnen. This work reveals the influence of Ferdinand Hodler and Evard’s teacher Charles L’Eplattenier, yet the intense colour contrasts lend it a dramatic quality that is highly characteristic of the Swiss artist and should be viewed independently of these models.
