Tree in Brown and Yellow, 1934

The square painting depicts an isolated, towering tree against an intensely colored, almost abstract-looking landscape. The trunk vertically divides the square canvas, while in the background, a dynamic interplay of brown, yellow, and blue tones unfolds.
Evard largely detaches the natural motif from realistic representation, instead emphasizing the painterly structure and color effect. The tree becomes a graphic line, contrasting sharply with the luminous background, vibrant in yellow and orange. The dark, earthy sections at the edges frame the center and lend the composition a strong sense of depth.
With its expressive color scheme and tendency towards formal simplification, the work is exemplary of Evard’s transitional phase between Expressionism and Abstraction. Color and form develop their own emotional energy – nature appears here less as a depiction, but as an expression of inner movement and light intensity.
