Virgin, 1945
VIRGIN 1945 oil on canvas 46 x 54 cm |
The mountain landscape depicted here was captured on the canvas with an expressive, fast ductus from a network of horizontal and vertical lines in blue, white and brown tones. This skilful brushwork by the artist André Evard also gives the picture-filling rock furrows and edges, which are further emphasised by the setting sun and its reflection in the white snow. This subject is one of André Evard’s favourite motifs. In this case, the Jungfrau massif seen from the municipality of Lauterbrunnen.
The influence of Ferdinand Hodler’s and Evard’s teacher Charles L’Eplattenier can be seen in this work, but the intense colour contrasts give it a drama that is very characteristic of the Swiss artist and should be viewed independently of the models.
