Green Tree with Blue Background, 1908

The small watercolor depicts a large, symmetrically structured green tree against an intensely blue background. The tree is rendered in fine, mosaic-like dots and strokes, reminiscent of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), which give it a lively, almost vibrating texture. The strong blue of the background contrasts with the various shades of green in the leaves and the brownish trunk. The pointillist painting style creates a harmonious, rhythmic effect, suggesting movement and light. Pointillism is a technique in which artists place many small, individual dots of color next to each other, so that they blend into forms and color mixtures in the viewer’s eye.
The luminous blue background lends the motif an almost mystical depth, making the tree appear as a symbol of harmony between nature and spirit.
